Conclusion Blog

By doing in depth game play, I noticed little things about video games that I wouldn't notice before. I would see small little details that made the game good or bad. Basically all the games I reviewed had little flaws here and there but they may not be flaws to everyone. I could probably make a better game than Shootout 2, by adding more levels and making it a little more difficult. But something like Goldeneye: Rogue Agent or Resident Evil 4 will be something I probably wouldn't be able to pull off. I also realized that making video reviews was a lot harder than it seemed, since I was gonna make every review a video review.
In the end, reviewing these games were fun. I also had lot's of fun making video reviews for this blog. I hope you enjoyed them.

WarGames

1. I would believe that most of the events portrayed in this film were accurate at the time or was going to be accurate within time. It does show the age of the computer hacker, and I would believe that computers were easier to hack in to back then. Today there is a lot more tighter security around computers and it probably takes a longer time to hack in than back then. As well the film was made in the early 80's, so the cold war was still happening, so for an audience back in the 80's seeing this film they probably would believe that something like this would happen. Luckily it's over now.

Mortal Kombat Deception

I have been a big fan of Mortal Kombat since I was little. I always thought it was a great fighting game and still do. Mortal Kombat Deception, I would have to say is purely and simply amazing. This Mortal Kombat game takes it to a whole new level. Instead of being just a fighting game, it has an RPG-style mode called Konquest.
In Konquest, you play the character Shujinko. You basically play his whole life out, from a 10 year old boy to a 60 year old man. You get to travel realms, to quests, fight people and learn new attacks. Konquest mode has a great storyline, with a great twist at the end. The storyline also picks up where Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance left off.
Deception also has many mini games such as puzzle games and chess, but in Mortal Kombat style. Which brings on a new twist of things. It also contains new fatalities, hara-kiri's and stage fatalities, which are all very cool looking. We also get new characters as well as the older characters. I'm happy that Liu Kang is back. He is my favorite character and he was absent due to his death in Deadly Alliance. It's funny cause in this one, he is actually a zombie.
The graphics are really well done, as well as the blood effect looks really cool.
I would have to say that Mortal Kombat Deception is the ultimate Mortal Kombat game, it's a big comeback after the little bit disappointing Deadly Alliance. If you are a Mortal Kombat fan, play this game.

Bitefight

Bitefight is an online game. In this online game you get to choose your race, either Vampire or Werewolf. I, myself am a Werewolf. The main point of the game is to train your character to get to higher levels by doing quests, raids and attacks against the other race. You can join clans and have clan battles against other clans. You will also get gold, which can be used to get your stats up, as well as getting equipment like weapons and armor.
The main problem with Bitefight....... IS THAT THERE IS NO GAMEPLAY!!!!!
Basically, it's like what the heck. This game is basically a click game. You click on the button to train, it takes 10 minutes. Work in the graveyard, it takes 8 hours. And you have to wait for these. It can get pretty annoying and I wish there were some actual gameplay. They could have probably have done something like Runescape or something. Even though Runescape is not that amazing, at least Bitefight would have some gameplay.
So in the end, you have to ask, why am I playing this? Well the answer is, is that I am a big fan of the Vampire/Werewolf legend. I find it very intresting. Also my friend Dummysoul is playing as well, he's a Vampire and sooner or later, we will have a showdown.
Bitefight is not a game for everyone, I would say only for people who are interested into the Vampire/Werewolf legend.

Goldeneye Rogue Agent

For me, Goldeneye Rogue Agent was a big disappointment. Supposedly it was a disappointment to a lot of people and it also got mediocre reviews. When making this game, I feel that they were trying to make ties to Goldeneye the Nintendo 64 game with it's title, but ultimately failed at that.
Goldeneye Rogue Agent has excellent graphics and smooth gameplay, but I can't get pass the fact that the storyline is hardly anything and is farfetched. Like you can move people and open doors with your "Goldeneye", it's kind of stupid and not really believable. This game has loads of violence for basically no apparent reason. It just seem bland and just not a good game. In the levels I lose intrest and basically give up playing. I like the idea of being able to use two guns at once, but its just the flaws of the game that make it very disappointing.
In the end, Electronic Arts did have something here. The idea of being able to play the bad guy for a change, but they didn't give it the full attention it needed to be a great game. This "James Bond" game will be forgotten and I would recomend you avoid it, unless your die hard James Bond video game fan. Just stick with the original Goldeneye and OO7 Nightfire.

Eighteen Wheeler American Pro Trucker

Eighteen Wheeler American Pro Trucker was originally made for the Arcade by Sega, in 2001 it got transformed onto platform release. This game does have a few flaws, but for some reason I find it fun.
First off, the game starts and you get to choose your truck. Either Asphalt Cowboy, Highway Cat, Long Horn and Stream Line. With Asphalt Cowboy being the average truck, I usually choose Stream Line due to the fact it's the fastest.
The main objective of the game is to drive to destination to destination, carrying shipments. What is really weird is that the whole destination and time thing is all messed up and is impossible. In one level you drive from New York to Florida with 2-3 minutes. Now that is just impossible.
A problem with the rival is that he always goes faster than you, it doesn't make sense at all. You can be driving over 80 miles per hour (This is a transport truck, so that is pretty fast) he will pass you. It's difficult at times to beat your rival.
Another problem with the game is actually steering the truck. Yea, I know it's a transport truck and it is hard to drive one in real life, but couldn't they have made it a little easier. To steer the truck well is to get your finger off the accelerator button and slam down on the brake to turn. It sucks because your trying to beat the time limit, so your in a rush. I actually played this game in the arcade version, and its huge steering wheel was even worse at turning.
The time limit is also another problem, it can be very annoying at times because it does feel that it doesn't give you enough time.
The controls are messed up too. Usually in driving games the accelerator button is usually X. But not in this game, it's R1. Why R1??? Like come on. When I first played this I had to tap all the button to figure out that R1 was the accelerator.
The thing that sucks is that the game is only 4 levels. Short 4 levels but very difficult 4 levels. Like really, not enough time limit, a rival that is faster than you, and control problems. Basically the only way I beat this game was through cheats because it is too hard and I don't really have the patience for it.
The good things about this game is that the visuals are pretty good for 2001. And the levels are very interesting. On the second level, while your driving on the highway, a tornado comes and throws vehicles at you.
In the end, I dunno why, but I like this game. I find it fun.

Rocky Legends

I am a big fan of Rocky. The video game Rocky Legends is a satisfying game for Rocky fans, but does contain a few flaws though.
First of all the graphics could be improved. When you see the game play, they are not the best and could be way better. A thing that is interesting is that the game keeps it realistic. If you get punched in the face a few times your gonna have cuts and bruises. And that happens within the game. When the character get punched a lot, you will see damage to his face.
Another flaw would have to be that the controls are hard to get used to. It is pretty difficult to do combos, so in the end your basically just tapping random buttons and hope your opponent goes down.
A flaw that needs to be fixed is the games difficulty. The levels of difficulty are: Novice, Contender and Champ (Basically, Easy, Normal, Hard) Problem with this though is that Novice is too easy, Contender is a bit difficult and Champ is extremely hard. It's basically all messed up.
Other than that the game is pretty good. You can choose career mode, and basically you play as either Rocky Balboa, Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang or Ivan Drago for their career, rising from the bottom to the top. There are also many training mini games that are fun. Makes you feel that you are actually training for the fight. When you win fights, you get money. You can you use the money to buy more training games, new boxers, new venues and you can actually get movie trailers from the first five Rocky films.
In the end, Rocky Legends is a fairly good Rocky game, just needs some improvements.

Jaws Unleashed

Aliens vs. Predator Extinction

The main reason why I bought this game was that I was a big fan of the Alien vs. Predator franchise. Even though I like Alien better, I had high expectations for this game. In the end though the game did not cover my expectations.
First of all the problem I had with this game was it's bird's eye camera view. I don't really care for this camera angle. I would much prefer third person view for this type of game. AVP Extinction looks a lot like an old war computer game. This game is for the PS2, it should have took on the aspects of better graphics and a better camera angle.
Besides the camera angle problem, this game can be quite fun at parts. I really like being the Alien race, going around, making eggs, hatching them, making more Alien, killing Humans and Predators. It's pretty cool.
As you progress through the game the levels get harder. Which becomes a problem because it gives you challenges that are pretty hard to accomplish. Another disappointing factor is that AVP Extinction is like only 6 levels long, but a pretty difficult 6 levels, even if you put it on easy.
In the end AVP Extinction could have turned out better than what it actually is, through all of it's flaws, it still can be a fun game to play.

Home Alone (1991)

Home Alone was actually a video game?, yes it was. This game was released back in 1991 when the movie came out. It was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega Game Gear, Amiga, PC, Nintendo Entertainment System and the Game Boy . I originally played this on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Even though it has been a long time since I played this game, I remember it fairly well.
Basically in this game you play as Kevin McCallister and you have to avoid the two intruders Harry and Marv for 20 minutes. Other than running away from them, you can set down traps that are in these weird square shaped boxes that turn into traps when you set them up. It pretty weird but the traps do their jobs and the intruders go down and they stay down for about 10-15 seconds. When the intruders get trapped by these traps they all do the same thing, they just fall to the ground, nothing different. Even though on the trap boxes it has a different pictures which represents different traps, but they all do the same thing. Also another thing is when the intruders do collapse it looks like they melt, its pretty funny actually.
A problem with this game is it's difficulty. You have to avoid the intruders for 20 minutes, if you don't, game over. No health bar, no second chance, just game over. And it's pretty easy to get caught to. You can either run out of traps when you need them or the intruders come at you from both sides of the screen. To tell you the truth, I never have beaten this game. The farthest I got was around 15 minutes actually before I got caught.
As for the graphics, you can't say much. Its the NES, and it was 1991, you are not gonna find amazing graphics in this game.
As for critic reviews on this game, the Angry Video Game Nerd did a rant on the game, a very intresting and funny review he did.
In the end, Home Alone is not too bad of a game, just a difficult one.

Alice Review

All I got to say about Alice is wow. Really. Basically I can't believe that Alice is a free product, even though it is a little primitive, it works very well and the graphics are pretty good. I find Alice a great beginner's tool to starting out in video game engineering.

I, myself, have lot's of fun using Alice during assignments. Discovering new things and tools of controlling the person or object is lots of fun. Sometimes I find Alice a little challenging at some points, trying to get an object or person to do something and they wont completely do what I want. Though it is a great learning tool, learning from mistakes and makes the programmer more experienced in the video game engineering field.

I am currently working on a short Racing game with Alice. So far, things have been running smoothly. Only a few challenges along the way. I can't wait to finish the game.

In the end I recommend Alice to anyone who wants to learn how to program games, people who want to make animations, or for anyone who wants to fool around with a animation program.

Binary Game Review

This is a game that the only people who can play it know Binary Numbers. That's it's main downfall. There are a lot of people who don't even know Binary Numbers so this game might just get passed, or given a try and then forgotten.
The game doesn't even give you hints during gameplay. I think it should after it sees that you have failed a level at least once or twice. The game expects you to know Binary Numbers right from the get go.
In the end it is a good game to test out your skills at Binary Numbers, but the player will need practice before starting this game.

Chasm Review

A very weird and strange online game. The game can be confusing since it does not explain where to go or what to do. Chasm is interesting for a while and gets the player eager to beat it, but after awhile the player will get bored and frustrated with this game. The player will most likely stop the game and move on to another game within five to ten minutes.

A great aspect of this game is that the graphics are good and they run smoothly. A suggestion would be to make the main character's movements more fluid.

In the end, Chasm will most likely be tried and then forgotten as with many online games.

Class Blog

http://ht-tech-teacher.blogspot.com

Intro

3. Create an introductory entry on your blog site. In this entry you should explain your current level of game play. Are you a power-gamer or are you a newbie? How long have you been playing games? What games do you play already? What do you think of video games? Do you think that anything educational can be learned from the games you play already? Explain your answer.

I have been playing video games for quite sometime. Probably 3-5 years. I am definitely not a newbie, but I am not a power-gamer. I played video games time to time, but only for like an hour or two.
Games that I have played include: Resident Evil 4, Devil May Cry, Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, Guitar Hero series, World of Warcraft, Jaws Unleashed, Grand Theft Auto, Need for Speed, Rollar Coaster Tycoon, Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, Rocky Legends, Chaos Legion, Legacy of Kain, Red Dead Revolver, Tony Hawk, OO7, True Crime Streets of L.A, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda series, The Sims 2
I think video games are fun and they are a great way to cure you boredom. They can also be very entertaining.
I believe some education can be learned from video games. It can help your reading and writing skills by learning new words that you may never heard of. It can help a person with their problem solving skills, a game for an example is the Zelda series, which requires a lot of thinking, to get game completed.

Assignment

Video game development is the combination fo storytelling, art, music, sound effects, animation and programming techniques, which creates a dynamic interactive form of electronic entertainment and education. Many skills are developed as the result of playing video games, and it is time that you proved this - to your parents and to educators. I believe it! Now you have to make other people believe it too.
What you will do:
1. Create a blog to log your video game play - give the teacher the url to your blog. Blogs can be created at the following location:
www.blogger.comhttp://www.livejournal.com/
Important Note: Do not use MSN MySpace. It is not accessible at school due to NetSweeper.
www.shadownightwolf.blogger.com
2. After you set up your blog make sure you understand safe web practices. These can be reviewed at http://www.scholastic.com/toolkit/classport/play.htm Do the quiz, print your certificate, and hand it in to the teacher. I will expect that you follow the rules of safe blogging.
3. Create an introductory entry on your blog site. In this entry you should explain your current level of game play. Are you a power-gamer or are you a newbie? How long have you been playing games? What games do you play already? What do you think of video games? Do you think that anything educational can be learned from the games you play already? Explain your answer.
4. Now start to play! Choose at least one game to play a lot. Choose other games to play from time to time. I expect that you will play more than one game, and more than one type of game (different genres). You can play game console games, handheld games, cell phone games, computer games or internet games. All forms are acceptable. The games you play MUST be suitable in a school setting (so no Grand Theft Auto, etc). If you are unsure please check with the teacher.
5. Play at least one game from the GameOn site http://www.abc.net.au/gameon/ (During class, if all of your work is done, you can work on this part of the assignment. Isn’t that great!) Make sure you look at the "Behind the Screens" sections on this site (http://www.abc.net.au/gameon/kafkamesto/bts.htm).
6. Log your play. In your blog comment on the following:
A) Identify what you like and/or dislike about the game.
B) Discuss the construction of the game - the set, the characters, the storyline, the animation, the strategies, the sound and music, the level of difficulty, other things you think are important.
C) Find out what others have to say about the game you are playing - link to the main game site, find links to reviews, find cheat links, find game overviews, find anything else that helps us to understand everything there is to understand about the games you have chosen to play.
D) Let us know how you are doing in the game. How far have you gotten? What is your score? What new skills and levels have you achieved? What new tricks have you learned? What else can you tell us about how you are doing?
Note: You should have many entries for each game and every entry does not have to answer all of the above questions, but when you are done, all of the questions should be answered in detail. Make sure you clearly title each entry so we know what game you are writing about.
7. Include screen shots and other images in your blog. Make sure you post the url of any images that you get from the internet and links to any online games (see example above).
8. Conclusions. As your final blog entry, write some concluding thoughts - do this on the last day of the assignment, in class. Tell me, what did you learn from indepth game play? Was the time well spent or was it time wasted? What I really want you to think about is what makes a good game. Could you design a game that is as good, if not better? Be prepared to support your statements with evidence. This means that after this assignment you will take what you have learned and you will design your own game using the tools and skills you have available.
Deadline:
You can keep playing the games forever, but the blog entries must be finished by Due November 28.That gives you 10+ weeks of solid gaming homework.
Be prepared to share your blog highlights with the class on the due date.
Note: Blog entries are automatically dated, and I expect to see at least 1entry every week (that is at minimum 10 entries over the 10+ week period - this will get you a level 2+ by the way.)
